Abstract

Hepatotoxicity induced by high-dose acetaminophen occurs through the formation of the toxic metabolite N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), leading to oxidative stress and liver damage. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective effect of a combination of ethanol extract of white turi flowers (Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers.) and vitamin C based on SGOT, SGPT, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. A pretest-posttest control group design was conducted using 32 male Wistar rats divided into eight groups. Except for the normal control, all groups received paracetamol induction followed by seven days of treatment. Paracetamol significantly increased SGOT, SGPT, and MDA levels and caused liver steatosis. Treatment with white turi flower extract, vitamin C, or their combination reduced liver damage biomarkers and improved liver morphology, with significant differences among groups (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that the combination exhibits hepatoprotective activity by reducing oxidative stress and promoting liver recovery.
