Abstract

Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers. leaves contain secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, saponins, steroids, triterpenoids, phenolics, and tannins, with antioxidant potential. Toxic doses of paracetamol generate N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), causing oxidative stress, hepatocyte damage, and increased SGOT, SGPT, and MDA levels. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective effect of a combination of S. grandiflora leaf extract and vitamin C in male Wistar rats induced with toxic-dose paracetamol. A pre-post test control group design was conducted using 40 rats divided into eight groups. SGOT and SGPT were measured enzymatically, while MDA was analyzed using the Wills method. Paracetamol induction significantly increased SGOT, SGPT, and MDA levels, whereas treatment with the extract–vitamin C combination reduced all three parameters. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal–Wallis test for SGOT and MDA and Welch ANOVA for SGPT showed significant differences among groups (p<0.05). These findings suggest that the combination has promising hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol-induced liver injury.
