The Effectiveness of Gracilaria verrucosa Seaweed Extract on Hemoglobin Levels, Hematocrit, and Erythrocyte Count in White Rats with Hyperlipidemia

Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood lipid levels that can trigger oxidative stress and affect hematological parameters, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythrocyte count. Gracilaria verrucosa is a species of red seaweed widely cultivated in Indonesia and contains antioxidant compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Gracilaria verrucosa extract on hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, and erythrocyte count in hyperlipidemic white rats (Rattus norvegicus). This laboratory experimental study employed a pretest-posttest control group design and was conducted from April to May 2026 using 25 male Wistar rats divided into five groups: a negative control group, a positive control group treated with simvastatin at a dose of 0.18 mg/200 g body weight, and three treatment groups receiving Gracilaria verrucosa extract at doses of 25 , 35 , and 45 mg/200 g body weight. Hyperlipidemia was induced using a high-fat diet and 0.01% propylthiouracil (PTU).
