Abstract

The informal batik industry exposes workers to hazardous synthetic dyes containing heavy metals like lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). Chronic exposure to these elements can damage the hematological system by disrupting erythrocyte synthesis. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between blood Pb and Cd levels and erythrocyte counts among 19 batik artisans in Kampung Batik Jetis, Sidoarjo, selected via total sampling. Blood metal concentrations were assessed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), while erythrocyte counts were measured through complete blood analysis. Results showed average Pb and Cd levels of 3.37 ± 1.16 µg/dL and 4.45 ± 1.01 ng/mL, respectively, alongside a mean erythrocyte count of 4.45 ± 0.91 million cells/µL. Pearson correlation confirmed significant negative links between Pb (r = −0.522; p = 0.022) and Cd (r = −0.605; p = 0.006) with erythrocyte counts. This demonstrates that elevated heavy metal exposure is directly linked to reduced erythrocyte levels.
