Review of High School Principal Leadership in the Perspective of Fiedler's Contingency Model; Analysis of Task Orientation and Relationships

This study aims to analyze the leadership of the principal of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Sidoarjo from the perspective of Fiedler’s contingency model, as well as the differences in leadership approaches toward teachers and staff based on work situations. The study employs a descriptive qualitative design using a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation with informants selected via purposive sampling. The results of the study indicate that the principal’s leadership is contextual and adaptive, with the application of leadership styles oriented toward tasks or relationships depending on the demands of the work situation. Differences in leadership approaches toward teachers and staff are viewed positively because they align with the characteristics of each group’s respective tasks. These findings affirm the relevance of Fiedler’s contingency model in the context of educational leadership.
