Islamic Religious Education Learning and Dating Behavior: A Phenomenological Study on Symbolic Stratification at "Peony Putih" Junior High School

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays an important role in shaping students’ character and religious behavior during early adolescence. However, a gap remains between PAI ideals and students’ social practices, particularly dating behavior. This qualitative phenomenological study analyzed PAI learning, students’ dating behavior, and factors contributing to the normalization of dating at SMP “Peony Putih.” Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving ten students, one counseling teacher, and one PAI teacher. The findings show that PAI learning is effective at the cognitive level but has not fully internalized values in students’ affective and behavioral domains. Dating is understood not only as a personal relationship but also as a social practice that creates symbolic stratification among students. Peer norms, intergenerational imitation, social symbols, and implicit school tolerance strengthen the dating culture, reducing the influence of PAI values on students’ social behavior.
