Formulation and Effectiveness of Chitosan Nanoemulgel Derived from Green Mussel Shell Waste as an Alternative Treatment for Diabetic Ulcers

This study investigates the potential of chitosan derived from mussel shell waste as a nanoemulgel-based therapy
for diabetic ulcers. The chitosan, extracted via demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation, was tested in
three concentrations: 100 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg. Physicochemical analysis revealed a stable formulation with a
skin-compatible pH and an average particle size of 340.38 nm. In vivo tests on diabetic rats over 12 days showed
that the 300 mg dosage performed optimally, achieving an 89.15% wound closure rate (p<0.05), nearly matching
the positive control. These results highlight that mussel-derived chitosan nanoemulgel is a highly promising, eco
friendly candidate for topical diabetic wound care, combining clinical efficacy with sustainable waste utilization.
