Measurement of Used Cooking Oil Turbidity Using TCS3200 Color and Turbidity Sensors

Used cooking oil is a frying waste that has the potential to be reused, but its quality must be monitored to ensure suitability. This study developed an Internet of Things-based monitoring system for used cooking oil quality using turbidity (NTU) and color (RGB) parameters. The system integrates a turbidity sensor and a TCS3200 color sensor with an ESP32 microcontroller and the Blynk IoT platform for real-time monitoring. Testing was performed on used cooking oil before and after microfiltration and transesterification using ethanol and methanol at different concentrations and temperatures. Results showed that the system could read NTU and RGB values stably and consistently and detect oil characteristic changes at each treatment stage. Turbidity decreased from 203–206 NTU to 184–188 NTU under the best treatment, namely 2% methanol transesterification at 50 ℃. Although NTU measurement in oil has limitations, the system is effective as a relative indicator of oil quality changes.
