SMAW Welding Analysis on Ship Steel Plate with Welding Positions 1G, 3G and 4G with Macro Testing and Impact Strength

Abstract

The rapid development shipbuilding technology made welding crucial element ship construction. The quality welded joints depends heavily selection appropriate parameters, particularly current strength and welding position. This study aims determine optimal parameters Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) varying current strength (80A,100A,120A) and welding positions (1G,3G,4G) regarding quality ship steel joints. The testing methods included impact tests determine material toughness and macrostructure examinations identify defects weld results. The showed highest impact value 0.981 Joules/mm² obtained specimen 120A current 3G position, where proper penetration weld metal resulted optimal toughness. Conversely, lowest impact value found 80A 1G position (0.23 Joules/mm²) due current being too low, causing insufficient weld metal filling groove. In contrast, combination high current (120A) and difficult position (4G) produced poorest macrostructure quality various defects such over spatter, overlap, underfill, and undercut. This study concludes selection current must be balanced with welding position to achieve mechanical strength while minimizing visual defects.
